"From the beginning it has been our hope that the Order would serve
a useful purpose in causing the Scout Promise and Law to spring into
action, especially in the Scout camps in all parts of our nation. We
are still dedicated to this high purpose." E. Urner Goodman, Founder of

Lodge Service Projects
|
|
Atta Kulla Kulla Lodge is involved in
several service projects throughout the year:
- "Gobbler Grab" is an annual project that
collects hundreds of frozen turkeys for local area food banks during the
weeks before Thanksgiving
- OA Workday at Camp Old Indian
to clean up and get ready for the upcoming campers in the
summer.
- Christmas gifts are collected for
children in area foster care facilities at the December chapter meeting
for A-Ni-Wa-Ya chapter
- "Good Fellows" is an annual project at
the Palmetto Center that organizes and distributes thousands of boxes of
food and other items for needy families identified by the Salvation Army
- A National Order of the
Arrow Committee matching service grant of $5,000 will be
used to improve the Field Sports Department at Camp Old
Indian in 2004. Matched by another $5,000 in funds
from AKK Lodge, this service grant will be used to purchase
eight (8) .22 rifles, four (4) .50 caliber muzzle loaders,
& two (2) youth shotguns for the Shooting Sports program
at Camp Old Indian. It also increases the quality
of the program, and shooting opportunities for campers.
This grant also provides materials to re-roof the shed of
the range. Atta Kulla Kulla is also working on a new rifle
range for 2005.

Gobbler Grab for
the Hungry
Every year since 1997,
arrowmen from Atta Kulla Kulla Lodge collect turkeys to feed the needy in
Upstate South Carolina. The Gobbler Grab started in A-Ni-Wa-Ya
Chapter, but now the entire lodge has joined in. The success of this project resulted in
feeding thousands of needy families, an article in the March-May 2002 issue
of the OA National Bulletin (page 5),
and required shipping some frozen turkeys as far away as Charlotte, NC to
have room to store them. In 2002, a corporate sponsor for a
Thanksgiving dinner for the needy dropped out, but some turkeys from this
project allowed Red
Lobster to host the dinner anyway.

OA Trail Day at
Camp Old Indian
On January 17, 2004, a group of lodge
members and scouts throughout Blue Ridge Council met to begin construction
of trails that will connect the Poinsett Bridge to Camp Old Indian.
Dr. Vic Shelburne and Buster Andrews, the Camp Ranger, coordinated
construction of the trail and removal of debris from the trail pathways.
